BIO
Apolonia Panagopoulos is a photographer working primarily in 35mm and digital using analog lenses. She is also a filmmaker, zine maker, and recovering video editor. She earned her Masters in Film and Video at CalArts, and BA and BFA from Tufts University and the School of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston; she also studied at the Slade School of Art at University College, London. A New England transplant, she has lived and worked in the Los Angeles area for over 20 years. She is married to a comic book writer and together they parent an 11 year old multidisciplinary artist.
Artist’s Statement
I am a photographer working in 35mm and digital photography using vintage analog photography lenses, as well as a zine maker and filmmaker. My work explores the quiet narratives of abandoned spaces, overlooked moments, and the mundane, directing attention to that which might be overlooked. I use photography, writing, and drawing to share personal experiences because I believe storytelling is how we make sense of our human existence. A recent example of my work is my ongoing project related to teeth and dental trauma which includes a series of photos and a zine. “Teeth” led me to my current inquiries, which include self portraiture, identity, motherhood, chronic pain, and aging in a female body. I hope my work engenders empathy and inspires a closer look at the beauty inherent in the more prosaic aspects of the human experience.
